The FUYA protein hair repair treatment: what happens in the chair, and who it's for

A step-by-step look at the protein treatment we do on Alton Road, the cheaper option that sits next to it, and the questions worth asking before you book either one.

The FUYA protein hair repair treatment is the treatment we do at Hair Shak Salon Miami, at 300 Alton Road in South Beach. It costs $258 and includes 40 minutes under a heating machine. It's meant for hair that feels dry, rough or tired after bleach, color, sun, chlorine or saltwater, which in Miami Beach describes a lot of people by the end of summer.

What happens, step by step

This is how Shak describes it on our hair repair page:

  1. Your hair is washed twice.
  2. The FUYA protein goes on.
  3. You sit under a heating machine for 40 minutes.
  4. The protein is rinsed out.
  5. Four drops of serum go in, and your hair is blow dried.

You leave with your hair done, so it's easy to fit before an evening out.

Who it suits

It's for hair that has been bleached or colored, and for people who are in the sun, the ocean or a pool most weeks. If your hair feels rough when you run your fingers through it, or tangles more than it used to, that's the kind of hair it's for.

It isn't the right appointment if what you want is a new color. That's a color appointment. It's also more than you need if your hair is healthy and you're only after shine. A gloss, from $78, is the better fit for that.

The $258 treatment or the $95 one?

There is also a hair repair treatment at $95 to $150. Which of the two your hair needs is something Shak tells you at the free consultation, after he's felt your hair and heard what it's been through. We would rather send you home with the cheaper one than sell you the bigger one for no reason.

One thing worth knowing about protein in general: more is not always better. Hair that gets too much protein can end up feeling stiff. That's one more reason the consultation comes first.

Can it be done with color?

It depends on your hair and on the color you want. Shak looks at both and tells you which to do first. When the ends are fragile, sorting them out before more color goes on is often the safer order.

Keeping it going at home

The same brand is on our FUYA page, and you can order online or pick it up at the salon. The hair mask is the one most related to the treatment: a deep conditioner for processed hair, used once a week for ten minutes, or longer under heat. The serum is used four drops at a time.

Two things you'll see on the labels anyway, so here they are first. The shampoo uses sodium laureth sulfate, so if your scalp doesn't get along with sulfates, wash with something else and keep the rest. And every bottle contains fragrance, which carries benzyl benzoate, linalool and benzyl salicylate. If you react to those, now you know before you buy.
