Miami humidity is the reason most people ask about a Brazilian blowout. What it costs at our salon, how long it takes, and what to ask any salon about formaldehyde.
A Brazilian blowout at Hair Shak Salon Miami costs $400 to $650 and takes two hours in the chair, with Shak from start to finish. Where you land in that range depends on how much hair you have, and you get the number at a free consultation before anything starts. The men's Brazilian blowout is $225.
It's a smoothing treatment. In Brazil, and in plenty of Miami salons, it's called escova progressiva, which is the same thing under another name. Most people ask about it because of the humidity: hair that looks fine in the bathroom mirror and doubles in size the moment you step outside.
Not exactly. Both are smoothing treatments and people use the names for each other all the time, but the formulas are different. If you've had a keratin treatment before, tell Shak at the consultation, because what is already on your hair affects what he does next.
It suits hair that frizzes, puffs up or fights you every morning. It is not a good fit for very fine hair. We would rather tell you that at the consultation than take the booking, and there may be something that suits fine hair better.
It depends on your hair, how often you wash it and what you wash it with. Anyone who promises an exact number of weeks before seeing your hair is guessing. Shak tells you what to expect for yours before you book, and what to do in the first days after, since that depends on the product.
This is the part a lot of salons skip, and it's worth asking about wherever you go.
Some smoothing products contain formaldehyde or release it when the hair is heated with a flat iron. OSHA, the federal workplace safety agency, warns that "even smoothing products that do not list formaldehyde on the label, or that claim to be 'formaldehyde free' or 'no formaldehyde,' can still expose workers to formaldehyde." The FDA announced plans in 2023 to ban formaldehyde in hair smoothing products. As of October 2026, that rule still has not been published.
So ask two things before any smoothing treatment, here or anywhere else: which product will be used, and can you see its Safety Data Sheet. A salon should be able to answer both on the spot. Ask us and we will. If you are pregnant or have trouble with your breathing, mention it before you book.
